CHRIS GROVES AND MARK KELVIN HORTON: DUAL INSTRUCTION LANDSCAPE WORKSHOP

Location: Historic Charleston and the South Carolina Lowcountry
Dates: April 22rd-25th 2010
Meet & Greet Reception April 22nd, 5:30-7:00pm
Instruction: April 23rd-25th, 9:00am-4:00pm
Cost: $550

Benefit from the instruction of two established landscape artists who will share their individual and distinct techniques and approaches to painting. Emphasis will be on helping students discover their own personal style and process in creating their work.
Workshop topics will include:
1. Painting Outdoors; Field Study; Studio Painting; Various Techniques and Materials
2. Using Photographic and Field Study Reference to Complete a Studio Painting
3. History of Landscape Painting
4. Building Your Business as an Artist; Gallery Representation; Self Promotion and Pricing Your Art
4. One-on-One Instruction and Critique
Mark and Chris will be available after class for evening discussion, painting and additional critique.
Weather allowing, Mark and Chris will paint sunrise and/or sunset paintings during which students are welcome to observe and/or participate.
Enrollment is limited to 20 students.

A Materials List will be provided upon registration.
A $100 non-refundable deposit is required upon registration. Payment may be by check, cash or credit card, but full payment or a credit card number must be provided by March 25, 2010 to hold your space. Your credit card will be charged with any tuition balance remaining if notification of cancellation is given less than 4 weeks prior to commencement of the workshop and such charge will be non-refundable, unless the workshop is filled prior to commencement of classes. This includes no-shows or withdrawals after the workshop has begun. Students will receive a full tuition refund in the event that Horton Hayes Fine Art cancels this workshop.
 
 
CHRIS GROVES ART CLASSES


Horton Hayes Fine Art is pleased to announce our schedule of art instruction classes taught by Chris Groves. A classically trained painter, Groves has studied at the Florence Academy of Art in Italy, the Colorado Academy of Art, the Loveland Art Academy, the Cottonwood Art Academy and the Denver Arts Student League.  He has also enjoyed a private, two-year mentorship with artist Jay Moore, which he considers a turning point in his artistic career. Classes meet once weekly for six weeks. Each class is 3 hours long with a limited enrollment of up to 10 students. Classes, dates and tuition for the next session are as follows.



STILL LIFE WORKSHOP
Level: Intermediate to Professional
Cost: $450
Tuesday Mornings 9:00-12:00, February 23rd-March 30th
Class will begin with topics on materials, composition, set up, and lighting. We will also cover various techniques of drawing along with preliminary charcoal sketches, value and color studies, and fundamentals of color mixing in order to prepare for the final painting. Classes will consist of lectures, slide analysis, and individual critiques while the student paints his or her own still life arrangement. Class topics will also include:
1. BUSINESS: Building Your Business as an Artist; Gallery Representation; Contractual Agreements and Internet Marketing; Self Promotion and Pricing your Art
2. HISTORY OF STILL LIFE PAINTING: Researching Past and Current Artists; Museum Visits and Analysis; Building Your Research Library
3. ONE-ON-ON INSTRUCTION/CRITIQUE

LANDSCAPE WORKSHOP
Cost: $450
Wednesday Mornings 9:00-12:00, February 24th-March 31st
The Landscape Program is designed for the artist seeking to improve their overall landscape painting skills and knowledge. Combining plein air sessions with studio analysis and classroom instruction, this program will give students the necessary abilities to continue on with their painting ambitions.
Program Topics Include:
1. PAINTING: Learning to Paint Outdoors; Field Study; Studio Painting; Various Techniques (layering, alla prima)
2. BUSINESS: Building your Business as an Artist; Gallery Representation; Contractual Agreements and Internet Marketing; Self-Promotion and Pricing Your Art
3. HISTORY OF LANDSCAPE PAINTING: Researching Past and Current Artists; Museum visits and analysis; Building Your Research Library
4. ONE-ON-ON INSTRUCTION/CRITIQUE

CAST DRAWING & PAINTING
Level: Intermediate to Professional
Cost: $450
Monday Evenings 6:00-9:00, February 22nd-March 29th
Cast Drawing & Painting classes teach students to work from classical sculptures, training the eye to perceive shapes, values, and proportion. Using the sight-size method, a plaster cast of a classical sculpture is reproduced in charcoal or oil. Exact measurements as well as matching exact shapes, values, and edges are emphasized. Instruction is given in the Atelier Studio tradition with the goal being a finished drawing or painting.
Classes will include:

One-on-One Instruction
Slide Show and Analysis of Casts and Drawing Techniques of the Old Masters
Materials Lecture
Types of Light Lecture
Open Studio Time
